VPN not working: 7 safe checks in order

What to do when a VPN will not connect or removes internet access: simple checks without network resets or commands.

First find out what has failed: the whole internet connection, one website or only the VPN. This saves time and avoids unnecessary resets. Do one step at a time and check the result after each step.

Seven safe checks

  1. Test the internet without the VPN. Disconnect the VPN and open two familiar websites. If neither loads, restore the normal Wi-Fi or mobile connection first.
  2. Separate one site from the whole network. If only one page or app fails, the problem may be at that service. Do not change the entire device for one page.
  3. Reconnect once. Select Disconnect, wait a few seconds and connect again. Repeated quick taps can make the app's state more confusing.
  4. Compare two networks. Switch from Wi-Fi to mobile data or the other way around. If the VPN works on only one network, note that detail for support.
  5. Return to the automatic protocol. If you changed the protocol manually, select the app's automatic or default option. Do not enter server addresses or keys from strangers.
  6. Update and restart. Install normal updates for the VPN app and operating system, then restart the app. If that does not help, save your work and restart the device.
  7. Write a useful report. Record the time, exact error text, device model, operating-system version and the network where it happened. Do not send a password, VPN key, IP address or a screenshot with personal notifications.

What to avoid for now

Do not reset every network setting, remove a profile or disable device protection because of a random tip. Those actions can remove saved networks and work settings. If support recommends one, ask what it changes and how to restore the previous setup.
