How to set up a VPN on Android and check it

A simple Android guide: where to get VPN settings, how to connect and what to check without technical commands.

On Android, you will usually connect through your VPN provider's app. You can also add a connection manually when a provider or administrator gives you the required details. If you do not have a server address and the other settings, do not guess them. Start with the service's official instructions.

Connect to VPN

Before you connect

First check that the internet works without the VPN. Open a familiar website over Wi-Fi or mobile data. Then get the app or connection details from a source you trust. Avoid unknown APK files and configuration links sent by strangers.

Install normal Android and app updates when they are available. Menu names can differ slightly on Samsung, Xiaomi and other phones.

Connect the VPN

  1. Use the provider's app. Open the VPN app and follow its setup. Android may ask whether the app can create a VPN connection. Accept only when you started the setup yourself and recognise the app.
  2. Use Android settings. Open Settings, find Network & Internet, then VPN. If you cannot see it, search Settings for VPN. Add a connection and enter only the details supplied by your provider or administrator.
  3. Check the status. The app should say that it is connected, and Android should show a VPN label or icon. Open a familiar HTTPS page and make sure it loads.

The VPN indicator confirms that a connection is active. It does not promise complete anonymity or guarantee access to every website. Our guide to what a VPN protects and what it does not explains those limits.

If it will not connect

Disconnect and reconnect once. Then compare Wi-Fi with mobile data. If the normal internet connection works but the VPN does not, avoid deleting profiles or resetting the phone at random. Save the error message and follow VPN not working: what to check.
