Before choosing a VPN, define the problem you want to solve. Protecting a connection, reducing browser traces and deciding whom to trust with your information are different tasks. This short guide helps you separate them instead of treating one privacy tool as a complete solution.
Where connection protection ends
A VPN encrypts the connection from your device to a VPN server for traffic routed through it. The journey continues beyond that server, so the website's own protection, such as HTTPS, still matters. These mechanisms complement each other. EFF's encryption explainer.
Check the client's configuration rather than assuming every app uses the tunnel. A tunnel means a protected part of a connection, not a protective shell around your entire device.
A different IP address is not anonymity
For a connection through a VPN, a website generally sees the VPN's exit address. Account logins, cookies and browser characteristics can still identify visitors. You also place trust in the VPN provider, making its ownership and data practices relevant. EFF's VPN guide.

Private browsing has a different purpose

The practical question is what someone else using your computer might find. Keep that separate from questions about who can observe your network connection.
Public Wi-Fi and fake websites
The FTC explains that widespread encryption makes public Wi-Fi connections usually safe. But fraudulent websites can use HTTPS too: secure transmission does not make the recipient trustworthy. - Is there a setup guide for my operating system and version?
- Which apps will use the VPN, and how do I check exceptions?
- What happens when the connection drops, and where is that documented?
- Who provides the subscription, what data do they retain, and how can I contact them about it?
- What does my chosen period cost, is there renewal, and what are the refund terms?
Save dated answers and links to documentation. If an answer is missing, mark it as unknown instead of assuming a feature offered by another provider is included. Once you have instructions, prepare a check for your own device: system version, client version, network, action, expected result and observed result.
