How to use a VPN on iPhone: setup and checks

A clear iPhone guide to VPN apps, configuration profiles, system permission and safe connection checks.

On iPhone, a VPN is usually configured by the service's app. A provider, school or employer may instead give you a configuration profile with the required settings. In either case, begin with instructions from a source you trust. An unknown profile can change network settings on your phone.

Prepare your iPhone

Check that a familiar website opens without the VPN over Wi-Fi or mobile data. Install a normal iOS update if one is available. If the service uses an app, follow the service's official link and check the developer name.

Avoid profiles that arrive unexpectedly in an email, message or unfamiliar page. If your iPhone belongs to a school or employer, an administrator may manage its profile. Do not remove it without checking first.

Connect the VPN

  1. Use the service's app. Open the app and start setup. iPhone may display a system request to add a VPN configuration. Approve it only when you started the setup yourself and recognise the app.
  2. Use a profile. Install a profile only with instructions from your provider or administrator. You can review installed profiles under Settings → General → VPN & Device Management. The wording may vary slightly between iOS versions.
  3. Check the result. The app or VPN settings should show a connected state. Open a familiar HTTPS page. If it loads, the basic connection is working.

A connected state does not make the phone's owner invisible. Websites may still recognise account sign-ins, cookies and location permission. Read what a VPN protects and what it does not for those limits.

If the internet stops working

Disconnect the VPN and try the same page again. Reconnect once, then compare Wi-Fi with mobile data. Do not delete the profile until you know how to restore it. Continue with VPN not working: seven checks.
